Five Essential Bits of Advice to Remember When Choosing a Spouse

1. Don’t marry potential.

What you see is what you’re getting. Don’t assume ot hope someone will change. Ask yourself- if he or she never changes, would I still be happy married to him or her?

2. Look for consistency more than big gestures.

Does he or she show up consistently? Does she follow through? Does he say what he says he will do?

3. Ask the questions you’re a little scared to ask.

Sometimes we don’t want to hear the answer, but I promise you’d rather hear it before marriage than after. The answer will tell you whether you should go forward or not.

4. Ask the people you trust the most to give you their honest thoughts.

It’s impossible to be completely objective when you really want something to work out.

5. Ask yourself- am I happy and delighted when I think of spending day in and day out with this person?

Tolerance is not enough for a lifetime.
